Mom's Special Day
Today is my mom's birthday, and I can't help but feel a mix of excitement and panic. Excitement because it's a day to celebrate the woman who has been my rock, my cheerleader, and my personal chef all rolled into one. Panic because, well, I still haven't figured out what to get her. I mean, how do you buy a gift for someone who has everything—including the ability to read your mind and know exactly when you're about to mess up?
But let's not focus on the gift dilemma for now. Instead, let's talk about the birthday girl herself. My mom is one of those rare people who can turn any mundane task into an adventure. Need to go grocery shopping? She’ll make it into a scavenger hunt. Need to clean the house? She’ll turn it into a game of "Who Can Find the Most Dust Bunnies?" And don’t even get me started on her cooking skills. She could probably make a sandwich taste like a five-star meal if she wanted to.
The Early Morning Surprise
This morning, I decided to start her birthday off with a bang—literally. Well, not literally, but close enough. I woke up at the crack of dawn (which is 7:00 AM in my world) and tiptoed into the kitchen to prepare her favorite breakfast: pancakes shaped like smiley faces, scrambled eggs that look like little clouds, and coffee that’s so perfectly brewed it could rival any barista’s creation. Okay, maybe I didn’t make the coffee myself—I cheated and used a fancy coffee machine—but still, the effort counts, right?
As I was plating everything up like a pro (or at least trying to), I heard footsteps coming down the stairs. My heart raced as I quickly tried to hide any evidence of my culinary mishaps (read: pancake that looked more like a blob than a smiley face). But before I could even think of an excuse for why there was flour all over the counter, my mom walked in with her usual morning smile—the one that says "I know what you did last night" but chooses not to mention it. She took one look at the breakfast spread and gave me that look that only moms can master: part pride, part amusement, and part "I know you didn’t make this from scratch."
The Birthday Celebration
After breakfast, we moved on to the main event: cake cutting! Now, my mom is not your typical cake lover. She’s more of a "let’s just have some fruit instead" kind of person. But for her birthday? Oh no, she was going to have cake whether she liked it or not. I had ordered a chocolate cake with extra frosting because let’s be real—who doesn’t love extra frosting? Plus, I figured if she complained about it being too sweet, I could always eat it myself (win-win).
We gathered around the dining table with balloons scattered everywhere (okay fine, they were just floating around because we forgot to tie them down) and sang "Happy Birthday" at the top of our lungs—well, mostly me singing while my siblings mumbled along half-heartedly. My mom laughed as we all tried to blow out the candles in one go (spoiler alert: we failed). Then came the best part: cake distribution! My mom insisted on cutting tiny slices for everyone because apparently "we don’t need all that sugar," but secretly I think she just wanted more cake for herself later. Classic mom move.
